Five years sober today – here's what actually helped
Hit five years yesterday. Never thought I'd be writing that. Here's what made the difference for me, in no particular order:
1. Harm reduction first. I didn't go cold turkey. I cut back gradually with medical support. That made it survivable. 2. Finding people who got it. Not people who judged me, but people who understood the struggle. 3. Dealing with the stuff underneath. Turns out I was drinking to cope with anxiety I'd never addressed. 4. Medication. Naltrexone took the edge off the cravings in the early months. 5. Being honest with myself about what I could and couldn't handle. Some friendships had to change. Some places I had to stop going.
It's not a straight line. I had setbacks. But five years later, I barely recognise my old life. If you're at the beginning, just know it's possible.

five years is huge jake. proud of you man. and your list is solid – those are the things that actually stick.
Congrats Jake! I'm at 8 months and your list gives me hope. The honesty with yourself part is the one I'm still struggling with. It's easier to tell other people the truth than to sit with it yourself, you know?
five years. wow. i'm on day 45 and five years feels impossible right now. this gives me something to aim for though.
Congratulations, Jake. Five years is a remarkable milestone. Your list aligns closely with what longitudinal research identifies as protective factors in sustained recovery – social environment changes, structured routines, self-awareness, and community support. The fact that you have internalized these without necessarily framing them in clinical terms speaks to genuine, lived understanding. Well done.
