You don't need to feel motivated to do the thing – you need to do the thing to feel motivated
This is one of the most counterintuitive truths about depression. The instinct is to wait for motivation to arrive before acting. But depression dismantles motivation – so you're waiting for something that can't come under the current conditions.
Behavioural activation reverses the sequence: action first, feeling follows. Not everything at full capacity – just one small, values-aligned thing today. A five-minute walk. A message to someone you care about. Getting dressed.
The key is that it connects to something you value, not just something you 'should' do. Values remain even when feelings don't.

this hit hard. i've been waiting to feel motivated for months and it never comes. the idea that i need to do the thing first and let the feeling follow is completely backwards from how i've been thinking about it. going to try getting dressed tomorrow even though i don't feel like it.
The bit about values remaining even when feelings don't really resonated with me. I've been feeling so flat lately that I forgot what matters to me. But when I actually sat and thought about it, 'connection' came up immediately. I texted a friend today for the first time in weeks. Small but it felt like something.
I love how you framed it as 'what matters to you, even if you can't feel it right now.' That gave me permission to name my values without the pressure of having to feel passionate about them. Right now I can't feel much. But I know creativity matters to me even when the spark is dim.
This aligns with what we understand about the neuroscience of depression. The brain's reward circuits become less responsive, which makes future-oriented motivation extremely difficult to generate from within. Behavioural activation works because it provides external input to those circuits. The action itself creates the neurochemical shift that 'wanting' cannot achieve alone.
update: got dressed. didn't do much after that but i got dressed and sat outside for five minutes. that's more than yesterday.
That is genuinely excellent. You acted without waiting for permission from your mood. That is behavioural activation in its purest form. Five minutes outside connects to multiple values – self-care, presence, perhaps nature. More than yesterday is always enough.
